Considering current circumstances, developing routines is immensely useful. Being slammed right back into lockdown with it constantly getting extended, it’s important that we have some semblance of control in our lives. One way we can achieve that is through building healthy and meaningful routines. Especially for students, it’s easy to sleep in, procrastinate, and not attend any online classes during this time. It’s also easy for us to drown in work as some teachers have no mercy on us whatsoever ;)
Anyways! Building healthy routines is important towards acquiring healthy habits and creating a better you.
How can we create healthy and meaningful routines?
Ah yes, you tell us routines are important, but where and how do we start? For starters, let’s identify what you want to achieve through these routines. It may be related to academics, working out, or other self-care exercises. Once you’ve identified your goals, consider creating a weekly schedule where you fill in the times when you want to execute your particular routines. I’ll emphasise that you should work around your school or work schedule as well as other activities you may have planned prior - we’re trying to maintain flexibility here 👍 Aim to complete these routines as often as you can - it takes 28 days to create habits ! If you miss a day, that’s okay, remain resilient and diligent and aim to complete it the next day.

Why is it important these routines revolve around us?
Okay with school or work, we’re obligated and forced to go 🥴 - unfortunately, there’s not much of a say there. But! As much as we’re struggling, stressing, and trying to survive, by creating healthier routines, it’ll ease some of that stress within you. Last year - where literally almost all of the terms were spent in lockdown - I took on exercising. I was consistent and did it almost everyday, and it actually helped me feel a lot better - especially during times where I was in extreme stress. I haven’t been as consistent or diligent as I was before, but I’m trying to adopt that routine once again. But, enough about me!
Carrying out these routines should not feel like a task or a burden. If it acts as a stressor rather than stress reliever, drop it. The focus of your routines and habits is you, it’s there to benefit you. As I mentioned before, it is important that you have something you want to achieve with these routines, especially goals that are beneficial towards yourself and your wellbeing. Aim to create routines that are suited to your needs and accomodate you.
I know that on Youtube, Instagram, TikTok, and other online platforms, many people

share their daily routines and habits. They seem extremely motivating and empowering, and makes you want to adopt those routines. For example, waking up at 5am or 6am. These have significant benefits and many people have reported feeling great and more alive throughout the day. But these early wake ups may not suit other people and that’s normal. I, for the life of me, cannot wake up at such ungodly hours no matter how hard I try. I was frustrated at first, but then I accepted that I’m more of a night-owl and actually function better at night. That’s just my personal experience. It will differ from person to person. I will stress this again; it is important your routines are catered towards yourself.
Build healthy and meaningful routines for yourself and your own benefit. The purpose should revolve around you. Have fun with it and take care of yourself.
