2020 was not an ideal year for a lot of people - travel plans were cancelled, jobs were disrupted, and students shifted into learning from home. The pandemic significantly affected everyone’s lives in various ways and to different extents. From a student perspective, one of the challenges that I personally experienced was learning from home.
PROS:
As a student myself, I consider home learning to have its fair share of pros and cons. The first benefit of learning from home was that it granted me more time for myself which was a positive thing for my mental health; I began exercising regularly and picked up painting. Also, I was able to give myself free periods for some of my classes as the workload was quite light for those subjects. In those periods I would sleep in, watch anime or K-dramas, or eat. That leads on to the next benefit, I could eat whenever I wanted (personally, I think this is one of the best pros of home learning). Lastly, I had complete control over my school day as I had very few online class calls so that gave me the liberty to adjust my schedule a bit.
CONS:
Now for the disadvantages of learning from home, the biggest con for me was that I felt quite lonely and I was deprived of social interactions. I wasn’t able to mess around with my friends from time to time in classes or hang out with them at break times and thus, I think it took a toll on my socialising skills. Another disadvantage was that some teachers wouldn’t teach the content and would mindlessly give us piles of work. Honestly, I was confused about what I had to do half of the time for certain subjects (especially my electives). As home learning relied heavily on the use of our devices, technical issues and difficulties became a stressor and a constant worry of mine. Imagine submitting an assignment one minute late because it took 5 minutes for it to load.
There are various advantages and disadvantages to learning from home but these are the ones that stood out to me the most. While home learning has its many benefits and pros, I prefer face-to-face learning and am glad that I have returned to school physically.
